๐ Backlink Analysis: Understanding Your Startup's Link Profile
Hey!
๐ค Why Backlink Analysis Matters for Your Startup
Analyzing your backlinks is important because:
๐ Quality backlinks are a top-ranking factor and a few links from authoritative sites in your industry could boost your rankings more than hundreds of low-quality links.
๐ซ Bad links can hurt your SEO, a sudden influx of spammy links could trigger a Google penalty, tanking your rankings overnight.
๐บ๏ธ Discovering a competitor's backlink sources could uncover new partnership or guest posting opportunities for your startup.
๐ 3 Key Areas to Focus on in Backlink Analysis
1. ๐ชQuantity vs. Quality
Not all links are created equal:
๐๏ธโโ๏ธ Check Domain Authority (DA) of linking sites using Ahrefโs free tool
A link from a DA 80 tech blog could be worth more than 50 links from low-quality directories.
Backlinks to my site SubmitJuice.com, each having a different DA and anchor tag
๐ Analyze link relevance, a link from a relevant industry blog is more valuable than one from an unrelated site, even if the latter has higher DA.
๐ Monitor link growth over time, a steady increase in quality links could indicate growing brand authority.
2. ๐ฌAnchor Text Distribution
Diverse anchor text helps your SEO:
๐จ Aim for a natural mix of links pointing to your domain. For example: A healthy profile might include branded anchors (e.g., "SubmitJuice"), naked URLs (submitjuice.com), and relevant keywords (startup directories).
๐ฉ Watch for over-optimization, too many exact-match anchors (e.g., "best SEO tool" linked 100 times in a single article) could look suspicious to Google.
Basically, you want to focus on putting in the work to make your siteโs backlinks relevant and natural, rather than copy/pasting the same link throughout the article.
3. ๐บ๏ธ Link Placement and Context
Where and how the link appears matters:
๐ Check the linkโs location on the page because a link within the main content is typically considered more valuable than one in the footer according to Google
๐ Analyze surrounding content. A link within a paragraph about your industry carries more weight than one in a long list of random resources. Yes, Google gets that picky ๐
๐ช Quick Win: Disavow Toxic Links
Use Google's Disavow Tool to tell Google to ignore low-quality links pointing to your site. You can use SemRush to audit your site and then get which links are toxic and which arenโt.
Download the toxic links from SemRush and then submit them to the Google Search Console Disavow page:
Oftentimes, if you have a lot of toxic backlinks, your siteโs domain authority will grow once youโve disavowed the toxic links.
